When standing before large moral and cultural issues we are often rendered helpless but seldom mute. Armed with irony, wit, acuity and paradox, satire, scepticism and detachment we are conscious of ourselves and accordingly of history yet unfailingly ambiguous about both. In this rapidly changing world, where little is static or stable, we are often hard on the art that precedes us. We see not so much a ‘world that was’ but rather an articulated emblem for preceding attitudes, contexts, sensibilities and limitations deemed no longer acceptable to us. Finding a way to collapse these troubled formalisms allows us to define the type of society we have evolved and attempt to invent our own.
Every system construes human nature according to its desired ends, whilst ignoring the more indecorous aspects or disguising them. And whilst political ideas mirror conceptions of both time and knowledge – where unable to accept the illusion of progress, that the future will be little different from the past - we can as a result be certain that it will remain much the same. However, remembering the past might offer us up a constructive metaphor if we think of remembering as a haunted repetitive nightmare, rather than a misty nostalgia.
Over 1000 days, between January 29th 2007 and November 15th 2009, my on-line social networking Gaydar profile received 38,340 hits. Some 15,591 visitors left a visible ‘track’ evidencing that they had viewed my page at this virtual community interface. Extracting from these tracked profiles, regardless of content, 44,954 images that in a virtual striptease of poetic philanthropy effectively became the exploitable pixel-palette in several bodies of work 'Paintings by Numbers' / 'The Magnificent Seven' / 'Mis-Leading Men' – which examine by turn: the canon of gay art history across the centuries – from Michelangelo to Hockney via Demuth, Caravaggio, Cadmus and Chatterton, Tom of Finland, Gerome, Gilbert & Geroge, Warhol, Lukacs, Overbeck and Pier et Gilles, Blake, Bellows, and Bazille; The leaders of nations with the death penalty in place for homosexual acts; Celebrities who have projected at some point through their careers a constructed heterosexual persona.
In an attempt to measure the distance between desired aspirations and societies comprehended permissions (where an object is possessed but that possession is imperfect) through a process of synthesis each re-created image is itself constructed from other images. Do these ambiguous double-positives produce a vulnerable negative, by pressing an aesthetic faux-veneer towards its inevitable social context, in a fraudulent act of artificiality, within an artificial deed of cancellation? Surface appearance is initially deceptive, a concise formal modesty points simultaneously in two directions – towards the mundane (like an assisted ready-made) and towards the ideal; and whilst what you see is exactly what you see, it remains simultaneously ambiguous. Beneath the façade of external certainty sits a wry but nebulous doubt, tinged with a sadness or a dignified melancholy, tenderly corrupting the things that we think that we know. With a nod to the pun, a nudge at nostalgia, and a wink towards kitsch, tacit ironies are imbued with an ironic sense of the comedic, and are driven by a desire to quietly challenge.
Using the technological communication tools of the present to confront, untangle and de-code unanswered questions from past, the intention is to create a three-way collision between time, space and culture; the ways that a sub-culture represents itself; and the acts of on-line communication.. Simultaneously reverent and irreverent, attractive and repellent, problems and questions, confusions and clarity, circulate and dissolve, condense and reappear amid an orgy of ironic clichés – the desires, seductions and playful sexuality, the self-obsession and the narcissistic paranoia, in a subversive charade that slips unsteadily and wavers somewhere between tragedy and farce. In essence I am not looking at the world from the standpoint of fulfilling a concrete or transparent dialogue, but rather with the aim of making something out of nothing, or nothing out of something.
